Overview
Cascina Luisin Barbaresco "Rabaja" 2017 is a stunning expression of Nebbiolo from the Barbaresco DOCG, showcasing the unique characteristics of the Rebaja cru. This wine reflects the traditional winemaking techniques of Cascina Luisin, known for producing wines that are a true representation of their terroir. With its rich aromas, complex flavors, and refined tannins, the Barbaresco "Rebaja" is a perfect example of the elegance and aging potential of Barbaresco wines from the Langhe region.
Vinification and Aging
- Fermentation: The Nebbiolo grapes for the "Rebaja" were hand-harvested and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with indigenous yeasts to allow the full expression of the vineyard’s character.
- Aging: After fermentation, the wine was aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, which add subtle oak influence while allowing the purity of Nebbiolo to shine.
- Bottling: Following the aging period, the wine was bottled without fining or filtration, preserving its natural qualities and allowing it to continue evolving in the bottle.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: The wine presents a deep ruby red color with garnet reflections, indicating its aging potential and complexity.
- Aroma: On the nose, the Barbaresco "Rebaja" opens with enticing aromas of ripe red cherries, strawberries, and a touch of raspberry. It is further complemented by floral notes of rose and violet, alongside earthy nuances and hints of tobacco and leather.
- Palate: The wine is full-bodied with a firm structure and silky tannins that offer a smooth mouthfeel. The red fruit flavors are balanced by a complex minerality, earthy tones, and a delicate spiciness. The finish is long, with persistent notes of dried herbs and spices.
Food Pairing
This Barbaresco pairs beautifully with hearty dishes such as braised meats, roasted lamb, and game. It is also a great match for rich pasta dishes, risottos with mushrooms, and aged cheeses like Pecorino or Toma Piemontese.
Serving Recommendations
- Serving Temperature: Best served at 16–18°C (61–64°F) to fully express its bouquet and complexity.
- Decanting: Decanting is recommended, especially for younger bottles, to help soften the tannins and open up the wine’s aromas and flavors.
Aging Potential
The "Rebaja" Barbaresco 2017 has excellent aging potential, with a drinking window from 2025 to 2035, and may continue to evolve beautifully beyond that.
