Overview

Cascina Luisin Barbaresco "Asili" 2017 is a renowned Barbaresco from the esteemed Asili cru, one of the most celebrated vineyards in the Langhe region of Piemonte, Italy. Produced by Cascina Luisin, this wine exemplifies the traditional winemaking approach of the area, offering a refined and complex expression of Nebbiolo. With its deep layers of flavor, elegant tannins, and characteristic balance of fruit and acidity, this Barbaresco reflects the unique terroir of the Asili vineyard, known for producing some of the finest Nebbiolo-based wines in the world.

Vinification and Aging

  • Fermentation: The Nebbiolo grapes for the "Asili" Barbaresco were hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The fermentation process was done with native yeasts to maintain the purity of the fruit and to emphasize the natural qualities of the Nebbiolo grape.
  • Aging: After fermentation, the wine was aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, which impart subtle oak characteristics without overpowering the delicate aromas of Nebbiolo. The wine was then aged for an additional period in bottle before being released.
  • Bottling: The wine was bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its authenticity and natural expression, ensuring it continues to develop in the bottle.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: The wine presents a bright, ruby-red color with garnet reflections, typical of a well-aged Barbaresco.
  • Aroma: On the nose, it offers an enticing bouquet of red berries, including cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, along with floral notes of rose and violet. Subtle hints of earth, tobacco, leather, and spices emerge with time in the glass, adding complexity.
  • Palate: The palate is elegant and structured, with firm yet velvety tannins that provide a smooth texture. The flavors mirror the aromas, with vibrant red fruit and floral notes interwoven with earthy undertones. The finish is long and balanced, with a lingering note of spice and minerality.

Food Pairing

This Barbaresco pairs beautifully with rich, flavorful dishes such as braised meats, roasted lamb, and game. It also complements pasta with truffle sauces, risottos, and aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Toma Piemontese.

Serving Recommendations

  • Serving Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C (61–64°F) to allow the wine’s bouquet to fully open and its complex flavors to emerge.
  • Decanting: Decanting is recommended, especially for younger bottles, to help soften the tannins and allow the wine to breathe, enhancing its aromas and flavors.

Aging Potential

The "Asili" Barbaresco 2017 has excellent aging potential, with an optimal drinking window from 2025 to 2035. As it matures, the wine will continue to evolve, developing greater complexity and depth.
