Overview
Borgogno Barolo Classico DOCG 2016 is a refined expression of Barolo, one of Italy’s most prestigious wine regions. This wine is crafted by the historic Borgogno winery, which has been producing wines since 1761. The 2016 vintage is a standout year for Barolo, thanks to favorable weather conditions that allowed the Nebbiolo grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. Known for its rich aromas, depth of flavor, and excellent aging potential, this Barolo is a fantastic representation of the region’s signature elegance and complexity.
Vinification and Aging
- Fermentation: The grapes were hand-picked and fermented in traditional stainless steel tanks with a focus on preserving the natural fruit expression. Fermentation was carried out at controlled temperatures to ensure maximum extraction of color and flavor from the skins.
- Aging: After fermentation, the wine was aged for a prolonged period in large Slavonian oak barrels. This aging process lasted around 24 to 30 months, allowing the wine to develop its complex bouquet and soft tannins. It was then bottled and allowed to rest in the cellar before release.
- Bottling: The wine was bottled without fining or filtration, ensuring its purity and allowing it to evolve in the bottle.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: The wine has a beautiful deep ruby color, indicative of its age and Nebbiolo character.
- Aroma: On the nose, it offers an enticing blend of red fruits, roses, and hints of dried herbs. Subtle notes of leather, tobacco, and earthy nuances develop with time, adding complexity.
- Palate: The palate is full-bodied and structured with firm, velvety tannins that provide balance to the wine’s rich fruit and earthy flavors. There is a lingering finish with a touch of spice, minerality, and a hint of oak.
Food Pairing
Borgogno Barolo Classico DOCG 2016 pairs wonderfully with hearty Italian dishes such as braised meats, roasted lamb, and risotto with truffles. It also complements aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano and Pecorino.
Serving Recommendations
- Serving Temperature: Best served at 18–20°C (64–68°F) to bring out the wine’s full complexity.
- Decanting: Decanting is recommended to help the wine open up and reveal its full array of aromas and flavors, especially in the early years of its life.
Aging Potential
This Barolo has exceptional aging potential and can evolve beautifully in the bottle for the next 10 to 20 years, developing additional layers of complexity and refinement over time.
