Overview

Oddero "Brunate" Barolo DOCG 2011 is a single-vineyard Barolo that reflects the outstanding quality of the prestigious Brunate cru in the Langhe region of Piemonte, Italy. Known for its powerful structure and elegance, Brunate is one of Barolo’s most celebrated vineyards, and Oddero’s interpretation of this site is a testament to both the terroir and the winery’s commitment to producing wines of great depth and complexity. The 2011 vintage is marked by a harmonious balance of fruit, tannins, and acidity, offering a rich and compelling wine.

Vinification and Aging

  • Fermentation: The Nebbiolo grapes from the Brunate vineyard were hand-harvested and carefully selected. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to retain the purity of the fruit, with maceration on the skins to extract color, tannins, and flavors.
  • Aging: The wine was aged for 24 months in large oak barrels, allowing it to develop its structure and integrate the oak influence. After barrel aging, the wine was further refined in the bottle for an additional 12 months.
  • Bottling: The wine was bottled without fining or filtration, maintaining its natural expression and ensuring its continued evolution in the bottle.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: The wine showcases a deep garnet-red color, with hints of brick at the edges, signifying the maturity of the Nebbiolo grape.
  • Aroma: The nose is expressive and complex, offering aromas of dark cherries, ripe plums, and rose petals, alongside notes of leather, tobacco, and earthy undertones. Hints of spice, licorice, and dried herbs round out the bouquet.
  • Palate: On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with firm yet velvety tannins that provide structure. Rich flavors of dark fruit, dried rose, and tobacco are complemented by an earthy minerality and subtle notes of vanilla and licorice. The finish is long, with an enduring complexity and a touch of warmth from the oak.

Food Pairing

This Barolo pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, roasted lamb, and game meats. It also complements hearty stews, wild mushrooms, and truffle-based dishes. Hard cheeses such as Pecorino or aged Parmigiano Reggiano would also make excellent companions.

Serving Recommendations

  • Serving Temperature: Best served at 18°C (64°F) to bring out the wine’s full aromatic complexity.
  • Decanting: Decanting is recommended, particularly for this vintage, to help open up the wine and soften its tannins.

Aging Potential

The Oddero "Brunate" Barolo DOCG 2011 has significant aging potential, with an optimal drinking window between 2023 and 2035. It will continue to evolve and develop even further with age, rewarding those who have the patience to cellar it.
