Overview

Oddero "Brunate" Barolo DOCG 2012 is an exquisite expression of Nebbiolo from the renowned Brunate vineyard in the heart of the Barolo region. This Barolo showcases the exceptional potential of this prestigious cru, known for its unique terroir that imparts depth, power, and elegance. The 2012 vintage reveals a balanced, refined wine, with the classic Barolo characteristics of complexity, tannic structure, and potential for aging. With its harmonious integration of fruit, tannins, and oak, this wine is a prime example of Oddero’s dedication to crafting wines that stand the test of time.

Vinification and Aging

  • Fermentation: The Nebbiolo grapes from the Brunate vineyard were hand-harvested and rigorously selected. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the fruit’s integrity, with a maceration period on the skins to extract optimal color, tannin, and flavor.
  • Aging: After fermentation, the wine was aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, which provided ample space for the wine to breathe and integrate the oak influence. This was followed by an additional 12 months of bottle aging to refine the flavors and ensure balance.
  • Bottling: The wine was bottled without fining or filtration, allowing its natural expression to shine through and ensuring it would continue to evolve gracefully in the bottle.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: The wine presents a deep garnet color with slight brick-red hues at the rim, reflecting its maturity.
  • Aroma: The nose is rich and complex, with aromas of ripe cherries, dried roses, and leather. These are complemented by earthy notes of truffles, tobacco, and subtle spices, with hints of dried herbs and a touch of vanilla from the oak aging.
  • Palate: On the palate, the wine is structured and full-bodied, with a strong backbone of tannins that are well-integrated and velvety. The flavors mirror the nose, with dark fruits, floral notes, and earthy elements, enhanced by a delicate minerality. The finish is long and lingering, leaving a complex aftertaste of spice, leather, and dried fruit.

Food Pairing

This Barolo is ideal with rich, flavorful dishes such as braised beef, roasted lamb, or game meats like venison. It also pairs beautifully with hearty stews, wild mushrooms, and truffle-infused recipes. Aged cheeses, such as Pecorino or a well-aged Parmigiano Reggiano, would be excellent companions as well.

Serving Recommendations

  • Serving Temperature: Serve at 18°C (64°F) to allow the wine to express its full range of aromas and flavors.
  • Decanting: Decanting is recommended, especially for this vintage, to allow the wine to fully open and soften its tannins.

Aging Potential

The Oddero "Brunate" Barolo DOCG 2012 has significant aging potential. It is expected to mature gracefully, with an optimal drinking window from 2024 to 2038. With time, it will continue to develop further complexity and depth.
