Overview

The Oddero "Brunate" Barolo Jeroboam 2006 is a monumental expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo's most celebrated vineyards, Brunate. Known for its ability to produce wines with exceptional aging potential, the Brunate cru offers a combination of power, complexity, and finesse. This 2006 vintage, bottled in the prestigious Jeroboam format, showcases the depth and elegance of Barolo at its finest, reflecting both the exceptional quality of the vineyard and the skilled craftsmanship of the Oddero family. The larger format allows for slow maturation, further enhancing the wine's evolution and making it a rare and collectible bottle.

Vinification and Aging

  • Fermentation: The grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. This ensures precise extraction of flavors, tannins, and pigments, while maintaining the integrity of the fruit.
  • Aging: Following fermentation, the wine was aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, which impart a subtle oak influence while preserving the purity of Nebbiolo's fruit and floral aromas. After barrel aging, the wine was bottled and rested for several more years to further develop.
  • Bottling: Bottled in a Jeroboam (3L) size, this large format wine will continue to evolve at a slower pace, making it an ideal choice for long-term aging. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration, retaining its natural expression and ensuring the preservation of its full complexity.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: A deep garnet color with orange tinges at the rim, typical of Nebbiolo's aging characteristics.
  • Aroma: The nose is complex and layered, with an immediate impression of dried cherries, rose petals, and underbrush. As it opens up, the wine reveals further notes of leather, tobacco, truffles, and a hint of earthy minerality, along with subtle spices such as cinnamon and clove.
  • Palate: On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with well-integrated tannins that provide a firm backbone. The rich flavors of red fruit, dark cherry, and licorice are complemented by secondary notes of dried herbs, tar, and a touch of balsamic. The finish is long and persistent, showcasing the wine's complexity and minerality.
  • Texture: The wine has a velvety texture, thanks to the softening effect of the large format, which allows for a more gradual integration of tannins and flavors.

Food Pairing

This Barolo is a fantastic match for classic, rich dishes such as braised meats, roast lamb, and truffle-based pasta. It also pairs beautifully with hearty stews, aged cheeses, and rich game meats like venison and wild boar.

Serving Recommendations

  • Serving Temperature: Best served at 18°C (64°F) to allow the wine to fully open and express its complex bouquet.
  • Decanting: Given the wine's age and structure, decanting is recommended to help it open up and soften the tannins.

Aging Potential

The Oddero "Brunate" Barolo Jeroboam 2006 has immense aging potential. With its vibrant acidity, well-structured tannins, and deep complexity, this wine will continue to evolve for decades to come, with an optimal drinking window from 2025 to 2045 and beyond.
