Overview

Tarlant Brut ZERO 2014 NV is a remarkable Champagne that showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of the Tarlant family, renowned for their dedication to biodynamic farming and minimal intervention winemaking. The Brut ZERO expression is made with no added sugar (dosage), which allows the wine to express its true terroir and the character of its grapes. This cuvée is a blend of predominantly Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay from the Tarlant estate in the Montagne de Reims, offering a fresh and elegant profile with a focus on purity and balance.

Vinification and Aging

  • Fermentation: Primary fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, preserving the freshness and natural fruit expression.
  • Maceration: There is no maceration involved in the production of this Champagne.
  • Aging: The wine undergoes extended aging on the lees for a minimum of 4 years, which imparts complexity, texture, and fine bubbles. The wine is aged without dosage, allowing the natural characteristics of the terroir and the vintage to shine through. The 2014 base wine is blended with older reserve wines, adding further depth and complexity.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: This Champagne presents a brilliant pale yellow color with delicate, persistent bubbles.
  • Aroma: The nose is expressive, with bright aromas of fresh citrus fruits like lemon zest, green apple, and pear, complemented by subtle floral notes. There are underlying hints of toasted brioche, almond, and a faint minerality from the extended lees aging, adding layers of complexity.
  • Palate: On the palate, the Champagne is crisp, clean, and lively, with a vibrant acidity that is beautifully balanced by a creamy texture. The fresh fruit flavors of citrus, apple, and pear are joined by gentle toasty and nutty notes. The absence of dosage allows the wine’s purity and minerality to stand at the forefront, offering a refreshing, dry style.
  • Finish: The finish is long, clean, and fresh, with lingering notes of citrus and almond, along with a subtle, mineral-driven dryness that leaves the palate feeling refreshed.

Food Pairing

This Champagne pairs excellently with a variety of dishes, particularly those that are fresh, light, and savory. Ideal pairings include oysters, smoked salmon, or sashimi. It also complements seafood dishes like lobster, grilled shrimp, or ceviche. For a more indulgent pairing, try it with soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert, or even a classic French goat cheese. It also works wonderfully with fresh vegetable salads or asparagus dishes.

Serving Recommendations

  • Serving Temperature: Serve at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to enhance its freshness and aromatic complexity.
  • Glassware: A tulip-shaped glass or flute is recommended to focus the aromas and preserve the fine bubbles.

Aging Potential

This Champagne has the potential to evolve over time due to its balance of acidity, fruit, and depth. It can be cellared for 3–5 years to allow the flavors to develop further, with additional complexity in the toasty and nutty notes, while maintaining its fresh and mineral-driven character.
