Overview
The Oddero "Bussia Vigna Mondoca" Barolo Riserva DOCG 2011 is an exceptional Barolo from one of the most esteemed vineyards in the Langhe region, the Bussia cru. Known for producing wines with great depth, elegance, and aging potential, Bussia’s terroir shines through in this Riserva, which captures the essence of Nebbiolo. The 2011 vintage was marked by a warm growing season, which produced fruit with excellent ripeness and concentration, balanced by fresh acidity. This Barolo showcases the outstanding quality of the Oddero winery, one of the most respected names in the Barolo region.
Vinification and Aging
- Fermentation: The hand-harvested Nebbiolo grapes were fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, where wild yeasts were allowed to perform the fermentation. This process ensures that the wine reflects the purest expression of the fruit and the Bussia vineyard terroir.
- Aging: After fermentation, the wine was aged for 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, which impart a subtle oak influence without overshadowing the wine’s natural fruit and minerality. After this aging in oak, the wine spent additional time in the bottle before being released. This extended aging period allows the wine to develop a remarkable complexity and depth.
- Bottling: The wine was bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its natural character and purity, allowing the wine to evolve further in the bottle.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: The wine presents a deep garnet color with some orange tinges at the rim, indicating its aging potential and complexity.
- Aroma: The nose is complex and expressive, with aromas of ripe red berries, cherry, and plum, mingling with hints of dried roses, tobacco, and leather. As the wine opens up, subtle notes of licorice, truffle, and earthy undertones evolve, adding to its layered bouquet.
- Palate: On the palate, this Barolo is full-bodied and well-structured, with firm, yet refined tannins and lively acidity. Flavors of dark fruits such as black cherry and raspberry are complemented by nuances of spice, leather, and minerals. The mouthfeel is rich and smooth, with a harmonious balance of fruit and savory notes.
- Finish: The finish is long and persistent, with the flavors of dark fruit and earthy nuances lingering on the palate, showcasing the wine's complexity and elegance.
Food Pairing
The Oddero "Bussia Vigna Mondoca" Barolo Riserva DOCG 2011 pairs wonderfully with hearty, savory dishes. - Serving Temperature: To enjoy its full complexity, serve this Barolo at 18°C (64°F).
