Overview
The Oddero "Bussia Vigna Mondoca" Barolo Riserva DOCG 2015 is a remarkable expression of Nebbiolo from the Bussia vineyard in the heart of Barolo, one of the most celebrated crus of the Langhe region. Known for its ability to produce wines of exceptional complexity and aging potential, this Barolo stands out with its richness and depth. The 2015 vintage benefited from a warm growing season, resulting in ripe, concentrated fruit while maintaining the necessary acidity for balance. This wine is a perfect reflection of the dedication and tradition upheld by the Oddero family, who have been crafting wines in the region for generations.
Vinification and Aging
- Fermentation: The hand-harvested Nebbiolo grapes were gently crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Wild yeast fermentation allows for a more natural expression of the fruit and terroir, while the fermentation process lasts around two weeks to extract maximum flavor and color.
- Aging: After fermentation, the wine was aged for 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, which provide a subtle oak influence while allowing the wine's natural characteristics to shine. Following the barrel aging, the wine was bottled and left to mature in the bottle for additional complexity and integration.
- Bottling: Bottled without fining or filtration, the wine is allowed to maintain its natural clarity and purity, evolving gracefully over time.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: The wine has a deep garnet hue, indicative of its age and the concentration of its flavors.
- Aroma: The nose is a beautiful medley of dark fruits, such as black cherry, raspberry, and plum, interwoven with more complex aromas of dried rose petals, tobacco, leather, and subtle earthy nuances. Over time, the wine develops additional layers of aromas, including hints of truffle, spice, and anise.
- Palate: On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with fine, integrated tannins and a vibrant acidity. The rich fruit flavors of black cherry and berry are balanced by savory notes of spice, leather, and earthy complexity. The mouthfeel is silky and smooth, with a robust structure and a long, persistent finish that reveals the wine’s depth and aging potential.
- Finish: The finish is long and layered, with dark fruit flavors and earthy tones lingering on the palate, showcasing the wine’s elegance and complexity.
Food Pairing
This Barolo pairs beautifully with a variety of hearty dishes, including roasted meats, game, and braised meats. It also complements rich, flavorful dishes like truffle risotto, mushroom-based recipes, and aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino.
Serving Recommendations
- Serving Temperature: Best served at 18°C (64°F) to allow its full complexity to unfold.
- Decanting: Decanting is highly recommended, particularly for older bottles, as it allows the wine to open and evolve, enhancing the tasting experience.
Aging Potential
With its fine tannin structure, vibrant acidity, and deep complexity, the Oddero "Bussia Vigna Mondoca" Barolo Riserva DOCG 2015 is an excellent candidate for aging. It is expected to age gracefully and continue to develop greater depth and complexity through 2030 and beyond.
