Overview
"IN TERRA" Bianco Romagna Albana Secco 2023 from Tenuta La Viola is a distinctive and expressive white wine made from 100% Albana, a historic grape native to Romagna. This cuvée reflects a natural, terroir-driven approach, crafted from organically farmed vineyards and vinified in amphorae to emphasize purity, texture, and varietal character. “In Terra” translates to “In Earth,” a reference to both the clay amphora vessels used during vinification and the deep connection to the land. The result is a soulful and structured white that bridges tradition with innovation.
Vinification and Aging
Fermentation: Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in clay amphorae
Maceration: Extended skin contact for approximately 20–30 days to extract phenolics and complexity
Aging: Aged on the fine lees in amphorae for 6–8 months with occasional bâtonnage
Fining/Filtration: Unfined and unfiltered; bottled with minimal sulfur
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep golden yellow with amber reflections due to skin contact and amphora aging
Aroma: Rich and aromatic, with notes of apricot, dried citrus peel, chamomile, and acacia honey, alongside subtle hints of herbs and clay
Palate: Full-bodied and textured, with a firm tannic grip and vibrant acidity. Flavors of stone fruit, bitter orange, and spice unfold over a savory, mineral backbone
Finish: Long and persistent, with a saline edge and lingering notes of almond, dried herbs, and orchard fruit
Food Pairing
“In Terra” is a versatile food wine that pairs especially well with structured dishes such as roasted poultry, rabbit with herbs, aged cheeses, and traditional Romagna cuisine like passatelli in broth or grilled piadina with cured meats. It also complements Middle Eastern or North African spiced dishes.
Serving Recommendations
Serving Temperature: 12–14°C (54–57°F)
Decanting: Recommended; decant for 30–60 minutes to allow the wine to open up
Glassware: Use a white wine glass with a wide bowl or even a Burgundy glass to highlight its complexity and oxidative nuances
Aging Potential
While expressive in its youth, “In Terra” has the structure and character to evolve over the next 5–7 years. With time, it will develop further tertiary notes of dried fruit, honey, and spice while retaining its minerality.
