Overview

Gulfi NeroBufaleffj is an exceptional single-vineyard expression of Nero d'Avola, hailing from the prestigious Bufaleffj cru in Sicily’s Val di Noto. This wine is a testament to Gulfi’s commitment to organic viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking, showcasing the depth, power, and elegance of old-vine Nero d'Avola. With its remarkable structure, complexity, and aging potential, NeroBufaleffj is a benchmark for Sicilian reds, offering a pure reflection of its terroir.

Vinification and Aging

  • Fermentation: Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing the full expression of the fruit and terroir.
  • Aging: Aged for 24 months in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and smaller French oak barrels to enhance complexity while maintaining balance.
  • Bottling: Bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfur addition to preserve its natural character and authenticity.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, almost impenetrable ruby red with garnet reflections.
  • Aroma: Intense and layered, with dark cherries, ripe blackberries, and plums, intertwined with notes of tobacco, leather, dried herbs, and Mediterranean spices.
  • Palate: Full-bodied and powerful, yet refined, with velvety tannins and a vibrant acidity that lifts the rich fruit profile. Flavors of blackcurrant, licorice, balsamic nuances, and a distinctive mineral undertone create a complex and lingering taste experience.
  • Finish: Exceptionally long and persistent, leaving traces of spice, dark fruit, and a subtle earthiness.

Food Pairing

NeroBufaleffj pairs beautifully with robust dishes such as slow-cooked lamb, grilled beef, wild boar ragu, and aged pecorino cheese. It also complements rich Mediterranean flavors, including roasted eggplant, sun-dried tomatoes, and dishes with aromatic herbs.

Serving Recommendations

  • Serving Temperature: Best served at 18–20°C (64–68°F) to enhance its depth and aromatic complexity.
  • Decanting: Recommended for at least two hours before serving to fully express its intricate layers and soften the tannins.

Aging Potential

Gulfi NeroBufaleffj is a wine built for longevity, with the ability to age gracefully for 15–20 years. Over time, it will develop further nuances of dried fruit, truffle, and leather, becoming even more refined and expressive.
