Overview

Cantine Valenti "Puritani" Nerello Mascalese 2016 is a distinguished expression of Etna’s volcanic terroir, crafted exclusively from old-vine Nerello Mascalese. Named after Bellini’s opera I Puritani, this wine reflects both the power and elegance of the varietal. Grown on the high-altitude slopes of Mount Etna, "Puritani" showcases refined tannins, bright acidity, and deep complexity, making it a remarkable representation of Etna Rosso’s aging potential.

Vinification and Aging

  • Fermentation: Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, allowing for a natural expression of terroir.
  • Aging: Aged for 18 months in large neutral oak barrels to enhance structure without overpowering the fruit, followed by additional bottle aging for refinement.
  • Bottling: Bottled unfiltered to preserve its authenticity and aging capability.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep garnet red with ruby reflections, hinting at its evolution.
  • Aroma: Intense and layered, featuring notes of ripe red cherries, dried rose petals, crushed violets, and wild herbs, with underlying smoky and mineral nuances from the volcanic soils.
  • Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with firm yet polished tannins and vibrant acidity. Flavors of tart red berries, blood orange, spice, and earthy undertones unfold gracefully, leading to a well-balanced and expressive profile.
  • Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering notes of dried fruit, tobacco, and a distinctive volcanic minerality.

Food Pairing

"Puritani" pairs beautifully with rich and savory dishes such as braised meats, roasted game, truffle-infused pasta, and aged pecorino cheese. Its acidity and minerality also complement grilled vegetables and traditional Sicilian specialties.

Serving Recommendations

  • Serving Temperature: Best served at 16–18°C (61–64°F) to enhance its aromatic complexity and structured palate.
  • Decanting: Recommended for at least an hour to allow the wine to fully open up and reveal its intricate layers.

Cantine Valenti "Puritani" Nerello Mascalese 2016 has outstanding aging potential, capable of evolving for 15–20 years. With time, it will develop deeper tertiary aromas of leather, dried herbs, and earthy undertones while maintaining its signature freshness and elegance.
