Overview
"Rosso de Veo" is Paolo Bea’s purest expression of the powerful Sagrantino grape, crafted from younger vines across the estate’s best vineyards. This wine is a bold and intense representation of the terroir, offering remarkable depth, structure, and aging potential. The 2018 vintage presents a harmonious balance between the grape’s natural tannic strength and an elegant, fruit-driven profile, all achieved through Bea’s signature minimal-intervention approach.
Vinification and Aging
- Fermentation: Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks.
- Maceration: Extended skin contact for over 40 days, ensuring deep extraction of color, tannins, and flavor.
- Aging: Aged for 2–3 years in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by additional bottle aging before release.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep, nearly opaque ruby with garnet reflections.
- Aroma: Rich and layered, with aromas of black cherries, wild berries, dried roses, licorice, and earthy notes of leather and tobacco.
- Palate: Powerful and structured, with firm yet well-integrated tannins. Flavors of dark plum, blackberry compote, balsamic, and Mediterranean herbs unfold alongside hints of dark chocolate and spice.
- Finish: Long and persistent, leaving impressions of dried fruit, iron-rich minerality, and a touch of smokiness.
Food Pairing
Best enjoyed with slow-cooked meats, wild boar ragù, grilled lamb, and aged cheeses like Pecorino di Norcia.
Serving Recommendations
- Serving Temperature: 16–18°C (61–64°F) to enhance complexity and depth.
- Decanting: Strongly recommended for at least 2 hours to soften the tannins and fully reveal the wine’s layered profile.
Aging Potential
This wine is built for long-term aging, capable of evolving over 15–20 years, developing even greater complexity and nuance with time.
