Overview
The Oddero "Vignarionda" Barolo Riserva DOCG 2008 is a masterful expression of Nebbiolo from the prestigious Vignarionda vineyard, located in the heart of the Barolo region in Piemonte, Italy. This wine reflects the unique terroir of the area, showcasing the depth, complexity, and elegance that Barolo is renowned for. The 2008 vintage was marked by a cooler growing season, which allowed for slow ripening, resulting in wines with great structure, fresh acidity, and excellent aging potential. The Riserva designation further emphasizes the wine's exceptional quality and its ability to age gracefully.
Vinification and Aging
- Fermentation: The Nebbiolo grapes were hand-harvested and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. This process ensures a slow, precise extraction of color and tannins, preserving the purity of the fruit. The fermentation lasts for around 10-12 days.
- Aging: Following fermentation, the wine was aged for 48 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. The long aging process in these large vessels allows the wine to slowly integrate the tannins and aromas, enhancing its complexity while maintaining the purity of its fruit. The oak influence is subtle yet essential in adding depth and structure to the wine.
- Bottling: The wine was bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its natural essence and allow it to continue evolving in the bottle.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: The wine presents a deep garnet color with a hint of brick-red around the edges, indicating its maturity and the development of complex secondary aromas.
- Aroma: On the nose, the wine is intensely aromatic, with layers of dark red fruit such as cherries, raspberries, and plums, complemented by floral notes of rose and violet. Secondary aromas of tobacco, leather, licorice, and spices such as clove and cinnamon add depth and complexity, while hints of earth and truffle create an intriguing profile.
- Palate: The palate is full-bodied and structured, with firm yet velvety tannins that provide a solid backbone. The flavors of ripe red fruit, dried herbs, and spices are harmoniously integrated, creating a wine that is both powerful and elegant. The acidity is bright and fresh, balancing the rich fruit flavors and adding to the wine's overall balance.
- Finish: The finish is long and persistent, with the wine evolving in the glass, revealing lingering notes of dried fruit, tobacco, and a touch of mineral essence. The aftertaste is clean, with a gentle spiciness.
Food Pairing
This Barolo Riserva pairs beautifully with rich, flavorful dishes. It complements roasted meats such as lamb and beef, as well as braised meats like short ribs and osso buco. The wine also works well with game meats like venison and wild boar, truffle-based dishes, hearty stews, and aged cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano and Pecorino.
Serving Recommendations
- Serving Temperature: Best served at 18°C (64°F) to showcase its full range of aromas and flavors.
- Decanting: Decanting is recommended to allow the wine to open up, especially considering its age and concentration, allowing its nuances to fully express themselves.
Aging Potential
The Oddero "Vignarionda" Barolo Riserva DOCG 2008 has exceptional aging potential, with its structure and acidity supporting long-term cellaring. It can be enjoyed now, but it will continue to develop for another 10 to 15 years, reaching its peak maturity in 2030–2035.
